A Journey over 123 Years.
 

bPOOR HOUSE:

 

The “Home for the Aged and Handicapped” formerly known as the “POOR HOUSE” is situated in Untkhana Nagpur. A land given By FATESINGHRAO RAJE BHONSALE to the Catholic Mission.
In the year 1890, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation approached the Bishop of Nagpur, Monsignor Riccaz to take care of the abandoned lepers, the crippled. Other institutions declined the request of the Corporation, but Bishop Riccaz took up the responsibility willingly and joyfully. He entrusted this work of Mercy to Salesian Missionaries of Mary Immaculate.

Thus a tiny seed was sown by Mother Marie Gertrude and her three companions.

(Dispensary date 8th February 1890: First work of Mercy taking care of sick and destitute in a small dispensary in a mud hut.)

Poor House consisted only of mud huts by the side of the Road where as many as 100 men, women and children were kept and cared for. They have had to be fed, clothed and medically attended too. The sisters repaired few camel stables and stayed with the people. With a meager help from Bishop, donations from friends and well-wishers, simple living and savings of the sisters, the sisters managed to run the Institution. The Municipal Corporation used to donate a saree and a dhoti to every inmate once a year. Thus the Residents of the Home and Sisters continued to live in a miserable dilapidated accommodation for nearly 70 years.

NEW BEGININGS

"By now the world has become more aware of the human needs and the rights of the people. Thanks to the generous donation of Mr. Anaceto D’Souza of  Congo- Africa,  the fatherly concern of Arch Bishop Eugene D’Souza, then Archbishop of Nagpur and the tireless efforts of Sister Solange and her co-workers, new constructions to accommodate the residents were put up.  The Department of Social Welfare, Maharashtra Government also helped the Home.
A leading Social Worker of Nagpur, Shri Ratanchand Daga was able to secure for the Home, recognition and grant in Aid in 1963. The first section to be recognized and aided was the section looking after the aged and infirm. Subsequently the Sheltered Workshop and the Handicapped Children’s sections were recognized.

ccccccccWe, the Sisters and Staff aim to create and facilitate an environment for rehabilitation and education, self reliance, with cccccccchuman approach that moulds disabled children and youth to live with human dignity and self confidence and the elderly to ccccccccdie in peace and serenity.

cccccccc• To create and provide facilities for education and rehabilitation of disabled children.
cccccccc• To provide and facilitate medical and social assistance to the disabled irrespective of religion, race, and caste.
cccccccc• To impart skill training to physically disabled men and women and providing job opportunities and to ensure holistic, ccccccccdevelopment of the students.
cccccccc• Providing the elderly Destitute of the Society a Home away from their Home.

In 1966 through the generous help of Misreor, new constructions were built, and the following year came up a well equipped Physiotherapy Department with Electrotherapy, Hydrotherapy. and additional wings to the children’s centre and Prosthetic Workshop.
In 1970s the grant being very little and lot of children with polio affected we needed more funds for the rehabilitation and medical care of the children and elderly.
We are grateful to Rev. Fr. Gregory Noronha who was in Germany.  He spoke to some of his friends about the needs of the Home and they formed an association called Aktion Untkhana and they generously  contributed for the modernization of our Home.
We are also are very grateful to our dear friends and benefactors, Doctors and Well wishers who has supported us to carry on this Humanitarian work of Compassion and Love to Less fortunate of our Society.
